Updated: Feb 28

Our Valentine Spotlight: Sheri Olsen.

In the ever-evolving world of title insurance, women continue to make an indelible impact, forging paths, inspiring others, and leading with excellence. One such leader is Sheri Olsen, Senior Vice President and National Director of Sales for First American Trust. With a career spanning 23 years at First American Corporation, Sheri has built a reputation as a trusted expert in the industry. We had the privilege of speaking with her about her journey, insights, and the wisdom she imparts to the next generation of women in title insurance.

A Legacy in Title Insurance.

Born into the world of title insurance, Sheri’s career choice seems almost predestined. Her father ran a successful title agency in Utah, which later became First American’s first direct operation in the state. Her mother also played a significant role in the industry, leading the Utah Land Title Association for many years. Though she initially pursued a career as a commercial real estate appraiser, Sheri ultimately found her way back to title insurance, continuing the family legacy. Today, her son represents the third generation of their family at First American—a testament to their enduring passion for the industry.

Building Relationships and Growing Expertise.

Currently based in Salt Lake City, Utah, but frequently on the move, Sheri leads sales efforts for First American Trust and its sister company, Trustlink. Her expertise in the agency sector and her ability to cultivate strong relationships have been instrumental in her success. Transitioning from agency work to banking services, Sheri embraced the opportunity to learn new skills while maintaining and expanding her network.

Challenges or Opportunities?

When asked about the challenges she has faced as a woman in the title industry, Sheri provides a refreshing perspective. Rather than viewing obstacles as barriers, she sees them as opportunities to prove herself. She credits First American for fostering a culture that supports women in leadership and provides ample training and development opportunities.

Mentorship and Guidance.

Sheri attributes her growth and success to the many mentors and colleagues who have inspired and encouraged her along the way. From within her organization to customers and even competitors, she has learned invaluable lessons from strong female leaders who paved the way before her.

Advice for Women in Title Insurance.

For women new to the industry, Sheri’s advice is simple: learn as much as possible about different aspects of the business. Title insurance is more than just title and escrow—it offers numerous opportunities in banking, accounting, and other fields. Finding a niche one is passionate about and committing to continuous learning is key to long-term success.

Confidence and Purpose.

Sheri’s self-confidence and drive stem from her ability to build relationships and understand client needs. While her initial motivation was to provide financial stability, her mindset shifted as she recognized her true strengths. By focusing on relationships, she found meaning and enjoyment in her work, which continues to fuel her passion for the industry.

Books and Podcasts for Growth.

Among the books that have influenced her career, Sheri highlights Brene Brown’s works, The Challenger Sale, and Strategize to Win by Carla Harris. As for podcasts, she believes humor is essential for a balanced life. While she enjoys work-related content, she also prioritizes laughter to keep things in perspective during stressful times.

Women Supporting Women.

Navigating workplace dynamics, especially among women, can sometimes be challenging. Sheri’s approach? Kindness and empowerment. She firmly believes that being a powerful woman and supporting others go hand in hand. Encouraging integrity and character in leadership sets the tone for a positive and successful industry.

Giving Back and Leaving a Legacy.

Outside or work, she spends a lot of her spare time with her kids and grandkids. They were her why and reason to push higher for so many years in her career. Sheri also has a passion for mentoring the younger generation. Serving on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club, she dedicates time to inspiring and guiding young minds, helping them recognize their potential. She hopes her legacy in the title industry will be one of making a difference—leaving it better than she found it and helping those around her grow and succeed.

A Life of Inspiration.

From her first concert (Neil Diamond, in case you were wondering) to her favorite quote by the Dalai Lama—

“If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito”—

Sheri’s personality shines through in everything she does. Her philosophy centers on making an impact, no matter how small, and continuously striving for growth and excellence.

Final Thoughts.

As a proud member of Her Collective, Sheri extends her gratitude to the women who have shaped her career and supported her along the way. She is a true testament to the power of resilience, mentorship, and purpose-driven leadership.
